Throughout 2013, Norway will be celebrating "Munch 2013," a series of special events and exhibitions commemorating the 150th birthday of Edvard Munch—an avant-garde artist whose work contributed to the development of "modernism" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among his most famous works is his provocative "Scream" series among others including "Anxiety," "Melancholy," "Madonna," "The Kiss" and many more.

My friends at Visit Norway have launched a new campaign to commemorate the occasion with this hilarious video—"How to Scream Like a Norwegian" that showcases all the scream-worthy experiences awaiting travelers to this Nordic country.

Here's a video showing you how to scream like a Norwegian:

Among the top sights to see in Oslo are the Munch Museum of course; Oslo Opera House; the National Museum of Art, home to Munch's "Scream;" Holmenkollen where you can see the world-famous ski jump arena renovated for the 1952 Winter Olympics, and the oldest ski museum in the world; Akershus Fortress built as the royal residence in the 14th century by King Hakon V and later rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the early 17th century by King Christian IV; the Royal Palace, home to the Norwegian Royals; and so much more!

  1. What a beautiful country! One of the places in Europe I've wanted to visit but haven't gone. The fjords, the countryside, Oslo - so many reasons to visit and explore. Maybe one of the most beautiful, picturesque countries in Europe. As a traveler and hiker, Norway would be a perfect destination. I've been in love with Europe for years and have been to many countries there. However, I've yet to visit Scandinavia. Maybe I would scream with excitement if I got to visit! :)

  3. Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for this lovely contest.
Norway holds a very special place in my heart. Scandinavia has some of the most beautiful, accomplished and hip people in the world. I think we could all learn a thing or two -- or ten -- from them. What a great example they set for the world. Here is a link to an article I wrote, "The Secure and Humble Pride of Bergen, Norway. http://tinyurl.com/bc3bjzy
Wishing you happy and safe travels always and all ways,

  4. I have had the pleasure to visit Norway the last 4 years in a row. I have been researching my family ancestry which lead me to an old farm along a clear blue river not far from a glacier......who would have thought that was where my ancestors lived before making the courageous trip to the new world. Each and every time I visit Norway I always go back to the Jostedal area but have also visited another part of the country as well. Last year I attemped to conquer Kjeragbolten but on the way up fell and dislocated my shoulder. I made my way down to the base but had no way to get back to camp. A wonderful young Norwegian woman offered to drive me down and they called for assistance and when I arrived at the hostel there was a helicopter waiting to take me to Stavanger. It was not quite the trip that I have planned but it was certainly memorable. On my next trip one year soon I hope to come in the winter months to see the Northern Lights. I often wonder what my life would have been like if my ancestors had remained in Norway........one can dream.

    1. Hi Larry and thanks so much for stopping by.

I am literally blown away by your inspiring story and courageous trek down the mountain. Certainly that must have been quite an ordeal and I am relieved to know that kind Norwegians took such good care of you.

How incredible that retracing your family's heritage led you to this sublime Nordic land and the experience of seeing that glacier must have been astounding. I haven't seen one yet.

I too long to see the northern lights and perhaps one year soon, we both will! Please keep dreaming my friend...look how far your dreams have taken you already. The possibilities are endless!

Now, I only wish that you would stop my more often to leave inspiring tales like these on my site for they add a touch of magic to my article.

Thank you so very much again.

  5. Munch spend some great years in Kragerø in Telemark. He named the coastal city the perl of the coast, and painted some famous paintings there - among others The Sun that is now decorating the University in Oslo. Telemark is an exciting region in the South of Norway, famous amongst others for the war-history (some might remember Kirk Douglas in the movie Heroes of Telemark). Please look at www.visittelemark.com to see screamworthy Norwegian experiences in this region!

  9. Thanks for the post, Jeff! In 2009, the Art Institute of Chicago hosted a very large exhibit of Munch works which is almost never seen in the United States. It was spectacular! I would strongly recommend anyone going to Norway to visit museums with his works which are truly remarkable and well worth the time. I haven't been to Norway yet but hope to get there soon. Beautiful pictures!

  15. This would be a great excuse to go to Norway. I'm part Norwegian on my mom's side and we've always thought about going but time and planning gets away from us.
I remember my great grandparents (great grandma was Norwegian and great grandpa was Swedish) they would tease each other with the rhyme - 1000 Sweeds run through the weeds chased by one Norwegian.
